Patients needing a tooth extraction may be asked to take dental X-rays. These images provide the oral surgeon with a better understanding of the tooth’s position.

After tooth extraction, sterilized gauze is placed on the area to control bleeding. Stitches may also be used to promote healing. Ibuprofen is often recommended for pain and inflammation. In addition, patients are recommended to eat soft foods for the next few days.

Tooth extractions are safe and commonly performed. It is important to avoid drinking out of a straw and chewing on the side of the affected area. Take prescribed medication as directed and use ice packs to help with inflammation. Do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours. After the 24 hours, use warm water with salt to gently rinse your mouth. Likewise, do not brush or floss your teeth near the affected area.

Dry socket can occur and should be addressed to your oral surgeon right away. You should also contact your oral surgeon should you experience the following.

• High fever
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Nonstop bleeding
• Chest pain or shortness of breath
• Swelling around the affected area
