Oral Health Maintenance
Children should begin visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth emerges or at least by their first birthday. This is a great opportunity for parents/guardians to learn how to properly maintain their child’s growing teeth and developing gums. In general, teeth begin to emerge between 6 months to age 3. Protecting these primary teeth is essential as they pave the way for the secondary teeth.
As your child loses their primary teeth, the secondary set begins to emerge. This can occur from age 6 until their early 20’s. By helping your child develop healthy dental hygiene habits, they are more likely to properly care for their teeth into adulthood.
Dental Recommendations
Parents/guardians should check their child’s teeth every 2 weeks. Search for signs of discoloration, dark spots, and decay. Avoid sugary foods and beverages from their diet. These food options are known to cause decay. Also, encourage your child to brush their teeth at least twice a day.
In addition, once the first tooth emerges, begin brushing it. You should also gently massage the gums with a soft-bristle toothbrush. This rids the mouth of plaque which can cause decay and other dental problems.
More often than not, your dentist will recommend that your child maintain dental exams and cleanings every 6 months. Fluoride treatments may be recommended as well. This helps prevent decay for those more prone to it.
Additional Treatments
Children can also be recommended for dental sealants. Sealants protect the molars from decay as they are often not brushed well. If your child participates in contact sports, they may be recommended for a mouthguard. These removable devices protect the teeth and gums from damage. They are also custom-made to fit well and comfortably.
